The WW2 Sunderland Flying Boat nicknamed the "Flying Porcupine" fought off 8 German Junckers 88 fighter planes and the brave crew managed to leave the fight and crash landed on Praa Sands on 2nd June 1943 killing 1 of the crew. Locals took the crew into their homes for shelter. Although the Spitfire, Hurricane and Lancaster were iconic planes this plane's capabilities were very very much underestimated, please take a look at the videos below and take a look at WWW.historyofPraaSands.org.
Here is a map below of the memorial. It is well worth visiting and just a few minutes stroll down the hill on Pengersick Lane you can call in at Sisu Cafe & Bar a few yards up the hill or stroll along the beach to the Welloe beach cafe and restaurant or come accross it using the south west coast path.
